This Week in Grade 1

It was another busy week in grade 1! We have been consolidating some of our inquiries as we approach the end of our unit, Interactions. The students continue to make connections to the different kinds of interactions and are taking more risks to share their personal experiences and views about feelings, relationships and conflict. We have also been exploring different problem solving strategies using Gecko’s Choices to help create positive interactions and develop good relationships. At home you can encourage your child to use some of the problem solving strategies they learn at school.

In Math, our class has been learning how to write number stories for sums of 5 through 10. The students are beginning to apply their math strategies as they investigate number work in addition and subtraction. We continue to practice counting by 1, 2, 5 and 10 to 100 and back.

In writing, we have been learning how to use connectives (first, next, the, after that, finally) to write our stories. The children have been practicing writing stories about previous experiences from home and school. It will take a few attempts before the children get comfortable using connectives in their writing and be able to write events in sequence.

We do our reading activities daily. The children read independently, in pairs and in groups. At home please help your child with their reading and writing of the sight words. Reading is developing skill for children in grade 1. They need plenty of practice to help them develop strategies and sight word vocabulary. Please make sure to send back their book and reading log daily so they may check out a new book to read with you.

Thank you for helping your child translate the feeling words and numbers in your mother tongue. If you have not done so, please make sure to send it back to school on Monday.

REMINDERS:

·      Readers and Reading Log: Readers and reading logs need to be sent back to school daily.

·      Pick–Up: You need to call or email Chantha in the ES office if there are changes in your child’s pick-up arrangement. If you are leaving the campus before 2:30 pm you also need to collect a gate pass (from the office) to be able to exit the school with your child. If your child is going home sick, the nurse will give you a gate pass when you collect your child from the clinic. 

·      These are the things that your child needs to bring to school daily:

 yellow folder

 book and reading log

water bottle, snack and a hat

Children need to have a hat to be able to play on the field or participate during outdoor P.E activities.

·      Please remind your child of their After School Activity for each day.
