This Week in Grade 1

It was another busy week in Grade 1! Our class continues to adapt to our busy schedule and daily routines. The children are becoming more comfortable transitioning in class and walking over to another building for Art, Music, P.E. and Swimming. We are still working on remembering to walk on the left side of the stairwells and corridors.

This week we unpacked our first unit of inquiry, Interactions. The central idea for
this unit is about being aware of how we interact with people and how it can affect the choices we make for ourselves and others. Our class did a Gallery Walk where the children had an opportunity to examine photos of themselves while learning and playing in class. Using a Visible Thinking routine, I see…. I think…. I wonder…. the children reflected on their recent interactions with their classmates. What do you see your friends doing? What do you think they did next? What do you wonder about their interactions? Can you make any personal connections with the interactions you see?

In Math, our class started to investigate numbers. The children have been sharing their thinking on what numbers mean to them. What do numbers make you think of? What number stories come to your mind? Why do we need to learn numbers? How do you use numbers? It’s really interesting to hear so many different views about numbers.

Grade 1 is beginning to see themselves as writers! Our writing workshop focused on using writing strategies and a review of the conventions of print. We have been practicing and paying more attention to proper pencil grip and eye-hand coordination.  For most of the children this is still a developing skill and will take more practice and risk taking before they become more comfortable with it.

NEXT WEEK:
Please send a set of clothing for your child to be kept in their school
cubby in case they need a change of clothes.

          REMINDERS:
·      Your child needs to come to school daily with a water bottle and snack.
·      Please make sure to check our single subject schedule everyday. We still have a few children coming to class without their library books.  Grade 1 is really excited to check out new books but will not be able to unless they turn in the books they checked out from the previous week.
·      Your child’s yellow folder needs to be sent back to school as soon as you take out the contents.
·      Your child’s swim gear should be packed in a clearly labeled bag. Please put a plastic bag as well for your child’s wet swim gear.

THANK YOU:
·      Thank you for sending healthy snacks to school.
·      Thank you for helping us with our dismissal.
