This Week in Grade 1

Grade 1 is thinking deeper and starting to make personal connections as we begin our third week inquiring into our unit, Interactions. Our learning activities this week focused on finding out previous knowledge and personal connections to the unit. The students worked in small groups and in pairs to share examples of interactions they have with their friends and family. Do you interact with your friends the same way you interact with your family? How is your interaction the same and how is it different?

In math, we continue to investigate our hundred-chart and look for number patterns.  The children have been noticing how numbers grow and shrink as we count forward and back. We have been doing our buddy counting by 1, 2, 5, 10, 50 and 100. Everyone agrees that counting with a friend is a lot of fun! We have also been discovering different strategies to count and figured out that we can work with a friend to make numbers more than 10 using our fingers.

Our writing workshops for this week focused on thinking about a title that tells about the main idea of the story. This process helps the students stay on topic as they write the stages of their story. The students also continue to work on adding punctuation marks, using capital letters and putting spaces between words. Good job with your writing this week, G1CC!

Highlights of the week:
This week we had our first buddy activity with Miss Bridget’s class from Grade 4. Grade 1 CC was so excited to meet their new friends. Next week we will spend more time with our class buddy, reading books and getting to know each other.

Monday is our favorite day of the week. We get to read books at the library and check out 2 new books to take home. Last Monday, Miss Rachelle showed our class how to choose the right books to take home. Thank you, Miss Rachelle! We can’t wait for our next visit to the library.

I would like to thank everyone who came to our Back to School Night. I really appreciate you taking the time to join us. Please let me know if you would like to be our class Parent Representative.

REMINDERS:

·      Pick –Up: You need to call or email Chantha in the ES office if there are changes in your child’s pick-up arrangement. If you are leaving the campus before 2:30 pm you also need to collect a gate pass (from the office) to be able to exit the school with your child. If your child is going home sick, the nurse will give you a gate pass when you collect your child from the clinic.

·      These are the things that your child needs to bring to school daily:
 yellow folder
 book and reading log
water bottle, snack and a hat
Children need to have a hat to be able to play on the field or participate during outdoor P.E activities.

Please sign your child’s reading log and send their reading book back to school the next day so they can check out a new book.

·      Please remind your child of their After School Activity for each day.
