This Week in Grade 1CC

Our class spent the week consolidating our learning experiences from our weather unit inquiry. We did our last experiment on the water cycle and revisited the list of wonderings we documented in the beginning of the unit. The students also did their summative assessment and shared some of their favorite unit related learning activities.

We finally finished our umbrella project! It was a collaborative project from start to finish. All the students participated in the planning, researching and designing of their umbrellas. We had teachers, parents and grandparents who stopped by our class to help write and translate our weather vocabulary words in their mother tongue. Four of our parents, Kathy, Yoong, Sunhee and Xiao Mei, helped supervise the activity and diligently worked on sewing and putting together our provocation umbrella, which our class decided to recycle. Well done, everyone!

In math, we have been doing daily problem solving activities using strategies. The students are given their daily word problem to solve independently using strategies we learn from our exploration work. We also continue to practice skip counting by 1, 5 and 10 forward and backward. At home you can help your child practice this skill in your mother tongue.

Our literacy lessons focused on investigating letter combinations that make a particular sound.  We made lists of words beginning and ending with sh, ch, th, thr and wh. We also continue to work on our book making activity. The students are beginning to see themselves as writers and are taking more risks in their writing.

                                                                 Thank You
Our class would like to say thank you to all the teachers, parents and grandparents for stopping by to help us with our project. A special thank you to: Kathy, YunJae’s mom, Yoong, Andrew’s mom and Xiao Mei, Peter’s mom for putting in days of work to help us finish our umbrella project. You are all amazing!

Help
Our new unit of inquiry, Communication kicks off next week. We would appreciate it if you could send us your old communication devices such as telephones, cell phones, walkie-talkies etc. You could either donate them to the class or lend them to us through the duration of the unit.
