This Week in Grade 1CC

Our class had a busy week getting back to our daily routines after the holiday.

We started the week unpacking our last unit of inquiry for this school year. Grade 1 will be inquiring into Personal Histories for the next 6 weeks. Our learning engagements will mostly focus on the children finding out about their past and present. Along the way, they will be interviewing their parents for information about their family and family members.

In math, our class continued learning about number concept and solving word problems. We reviewed our number strategies and how to use them to help solve mathematical word problems.  The children are learning to record and explain their thinking using equations, words and models.

Highlights of the week:

What is CHANGE?
Our class has been investigating and discovering what change looks like. We spent one afternoon in our butterfly gardening observing the different stages of a butterfly’s life cycle. We found butterfly eggs in branches of trees and leaves everywhere. We even witnessed a butterfly breaking loose from a cocoon. What a treat!

Math Exploration
It was work and fun in Math this week! Our class explored 2 digit number problems in small groups. Students explained and modelled their mathematical thinking to their peers.
We also started exploring measurement focusing on length and height.

Cycling Man
On Thursday April 20th we had a visit from ‘Super Cycling Man’ (aka Will Hodson an elementary teacher from London) who is riding around the world in order to:-
  • Raise £100,000 for Parkinson’s UK and several other charities
  • Cycle 100,000 kilometres across all 7 continents (including Antarctica) - a world first
  • Engage 100,000 children with the adventure through school visits and video calls

THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT!
Thank you for sending in your child’s baby photo.
Today we sent home some forms that we would like for you to fill out with your child over the weekend and return to us next week.  Your child will use the information  for their personal history project.

REMINDERS:

·      Home Learning: Please make sure to sign your child’s reading log after you finish reading together.

·      Snack: I have noticed a few sweets in some of the snack boxes. Please prepare simple, healthy and manageable snack for your child. Crackers, cheeses, nuts, veggies and fruits are very popular with kids. Please do not send candies and chocolates to school.

·      Please have your child wear their shoes to school everyday. It can be uncomfortable and unsafe for your child running outside and walking up and down the stairwells with flip- flops on. They may wear or bring their flip-flops to school on Tuesdays when we have swimming.

·      Pick–Up: You need to call or email Chantha in the ES office if there are changes in your child’s pick-up arrangement. If you are leaving the campus before 2:30 pm you also need to collect a gate pass (from the office) to be able to exit the school with your child. If your child is going home sick, the nurse will give you a gate pass when you collect your child from the clinic.

·      These are the things that your child needs to bring to school daily:
blue folder
 book and reading log
water bottle, snack and a hat
Children need to have a hat to be able to play on the field or participate during outdoor P.E activities.
·      Please remind your child of their After School Activity for each day.

Have a great weekend!
